Episode Spotlight: You're Under Arrest,

November 6th 2008 16:04
Readers, I'm happy to announce that Second Look Anime is now Animebottle.com! That's right, the Orble Powers That Be have graciously allowed me to take over this domain (woo-hoo!), so now when I judge anime and manga, a lot more people will now be judging me (yikes!). Second Look readers, nothing will change; you'll still get the quality reviews, essays, and random anime-related thoughts from yours truly. Animebottle fans, the focus will be a little broader and the topics may a little different, but I will attempt to live up to the review standards set by my predecessor.

Anyhoo, on with today's post!

In the second episode of the series, the crew of Bokuto station has to take a sick cat to the vet, a normally simple task that’s complicated by a raging typhoon! Add to the mix a rogue driver who has a history with Ken, and it’s going to an eventful night.

After a strong start, You’re Under Arrest follows up with one of the best episodes of the series. The show has been in the news lately, since the newest season (You’re Under Arrest: Full Throttle) recently aired in Japan.

This episode still has the partners getting to know each other and us getting to know them. It introduces the pre-school children who become the requisite cuteness factor to the series. And it wraps up with a righteous car chase scene.

The best part of the episode is its treatment of Ken Nakajima. In Episode 1, he’s naturally overshadowed, since it focuses on the relationship between Miyuki and Natsumi. Here, he’s really given a chance to shine. Not only does he show himself to be a kickass motorcycle cop, his relationship with Miyuki is further explored. They may be too shy to confess their feelings for each other, but there’s a bond of trust between them, and an implicit faith in each other’s abilities. This subplot segues nicely into the next episode, which focuses on Ken and Miyuki.

The first episode was an excellent beginning to the series, but “Tokyo Typhoon Rally” adds some real dimension to the characters and tells the audience that these people aren’t just going to be played for laughs and action, they’re going to be treated as, well, people. The next two episodes of the OVA continue this trend. With a start like this, it’s not hard to see how the franchise became so popular.
