XxxHolic: A Midsummer's Night Dream

"Collectors have an unusual sense of attachment to some specific thing. That attachment is what we describe with the sufficix 'holic'."
SUMMARY:
The movie XxxHolic: A Midsummer's Night Dream is actually based off of the original series, XxxHolic. The anime features a teenage boy named Watanuki who is bothered by spirits who follow him all over the place. He asks the Time-Space Witch, Yuuko, to get rid of him, and in exchange, he ends up as her servant.
In the movie, Yuuko is invited to a mansion with a troop of 'collectors', whom have been told to come to the mansion to 'complete their collections'. In truth, they are being studied and watched to decide who will enter the host's collection and the host desperately wants Yuuko to be part of it.
REVIEW:
I have always liked the XxxHolic manga and anime. The minute I read the books I was enraptured and the anime was equally magnificent. So I didn't expect anything less than a masterpiece for the movie, and I was greeted by exactly what I desired.
This time I will start off with the dub voices, because I've just had the luck to find a copy that had the dub voices on it. The dub voices are very, VERY good. It falls into the catergory of truly awesome voice acting. Especially Watanuki's voice. The voice they chose for him was wild, erractic, and very suiting to him character. The only voice that grated on my nerves was Himawari's (I don't think it suits her very well).
The second thing I will note is the amazing surrealty of the movie's art design. On top of the unique character designs that Clamp has become famous for, the backgrounds are absolutely amazing as they wander around this mansion with its rooms full of beautiful ponds and Japanese temples. The mansion's doors are like portals to other worlds and it's fascinatingly beautiful.
Now on to the plot. It has amazing build-up. It brings you to this mansion and through the mysteries of it, adding piece after piece to this mysterious puzzle. Who is the host? Why are they there? Where are the others disappearing to? And then they encounter the collection rooms, where every collection of the collectors is there. But why? Why are the collectors here? And there is a reason, a reason connected to a little girl and her collection. I'm not going to ruin it for you, but the mysteries are interesting and the plot ends well, tying everything back together.
Finally, I will note the music. There are several notably good places where a piano comes into play and adds to some of the more surreal parts of the film. They are very enchanting and interesting.
RATING:
Story: A
Dub: A
Art: A
Music: A-
This movie is a great movie and extremely surreal and beautiful. It may scare some children due to the fact that at some points it can be translated as very creepy.
