Pets of Anime

Not a complete list, just a sampling of some of the more prominent ones.
Maya from Azumanga Daioh
When Maya and Sakaki met, it was love at first sight. It’s a star-crossed love to be sure. Most cats don’t like Sakaki, and Maya is a protected species, not to be removed from his birthplace of Okinawa. But not only did Maya stow away on a ship to be with Sakaki, he defended her from a pack of neighborhood cats once he landed, in spite of being weak and dehydrated. For her part, Sakaki is planning on leaving home and getting a place of her own, just so she and Maya can be together. These two are together for life.
Mr. Tadakichi from Azumanga Daioh
A big, yet gentle, Great Pyrenees dog, Tadakichi-san is described by Chiyo-chan as “a man of character”, and he truly is. He’s been looking out for Chiyo since she was a little girl (well, a littler girl), and is one of the few animals friendly with Miss Sakaki. He even makes friends with Maya when Chiyo temporarily takes her in, showing that he’s not afraid to share the spotlight.
Moughi from Dirty Pair
OK, he’s a complete lazybones (his signature dialogue is “Yaaaaawn”), and he’s a little scary when he’s awake, but he’s always got Kei and Yuri’s backs when when they need it, and can fly a spaceship like he’s the Red Baron (this skill coming in particularly handy in the OVA Flight 005 Conspiracy). Interestingly, in the DP remake Dirty Pair Flash, Moughi was remade as well, into an adorable little kitten, though still with the tentacle-like appendages on his back.
Jiji from Kiki’s Delivery Service
At first, Jiji may seem to be a typical black cat, but he’s much more. Voiced by the late, great Phil Hartmann, you can always count on him to give his honest opinion. He’s the perfect familiar for a young witch just starting out.
Ein from Cowboy Bebop
Aside from eat, run away from danger, and annoy Spike, Ein doesn’t seem to do much, but who doesn’t like a Welsh corgy? In spite of his aversion to work, Ein is very loyal, and has saved Jet’s life on one occasion. And even if you don’t know what a data dog is (we never do quite find out, even after seeing the whole series), it’s always nice to have one around.
Kuroneko from Trigun
Aside from appear in every episode at humorous times, Kuroneko doesn’t do very much either, but he’s always fun to see, and cute as the dickens.
Kilala from Inuyasha
Want a pet as cute and cuddly as Maya? Need a pet as a tough and fearsome as Moughi? Need a pet you could ride on, like Mr. Tadakichi? No problem! With Kilala, a nekomata (demon cat) who travels with Sango, you get all three. So, whether you need to fly to the next village, fight evil demons, or just impress the ladies, Kilala is the perfect companion.
