Anime Review: Dirty Pair, the Flight 005 Conspiracy
March 9th 2009 01:29
The Lovely Angels’ new case gives double trouble a whole new meaning. Their assignment is to investigate two seemingly unrelated incidents: the destruction of a space liner mid-route, and the disappearance of a renowned scientist and his family. But the WWWA central computer says they’re connected, and it’s up to the Dirty Pair to find out how.
Sadly the last of the original Dirty Pair productions, the Flight 005 Conspiracy is surprisingly involved for an hour-long OVA, with Kei and Yuri showing their detective chops against a background of serious political intrigue. It turns out that two planetary governments and a criminal syndicate were interested in the scientist’s work, and the liner was on its way to a third planet when it was destroyed, so there are a lot of threads to tease out before the mystery is solved. F005C also doesn’t fall into the trap of making the plot overly complex. By the end, you know who dunnit, how they did it, and how everyone else fit in.
The other characters are more two-dimensional, although that’s to be expected in a short piece like this. One character has potential, but he’s killed early on, apparently to give Kei a personal stake in beating the bad guys. Another character is introduced later and proves invaluable in the climactic battle, but we never found out much about him.
The action here does not disappoint. There are three good action sequences, in addition to a couple of minor ones. The final battle and rescue are well thought-out, and elements of it are reminiscent of the rescue scene in Star Wars. There are a fair amount of spaceship battle scenes as well, which is unusual for a Dirty Pair story.
Geeking out: In one scene, Yuri uses the “Bloody Card”, her signature weapon in the novels, but rarely seen in any of the animes.
Extras: ADV previews only
Great moments: Kei’s rescue of Yuri from the apartment building
Summary: One of the better Dirty Pair offerings. Humor, mystery, action, this one has all the good stuff. Grade: A minus
Age rating: 14 and up. Fan service (of course), violence, man’s head explodes off-camera.
