Anime Review: Animation Runner Kuromi 2
November 29th 2008 18:56
Kuromi is still on the job, and things are crazier than ever. The studio is working on three series at once, the crew has to deal with a new producer who cares more about deadlines than quality, and the director chose this moment to try and quit smoking! What’s an animation runner to do?
Kuromi and the rest of Studio Petit are back in a new OVA, and this one is every bit as good as its predecessor , Kuromi is as enthusiastic (and slightly naïve) as ever, and the rest of the cast are still their delightfully eccentric selves. The entire cast from the original (including the incomparable Lisa Ortiz) are back in the dubbed version, with the exception of Suzy Prue, who voiced Shihinmatsu the director in the original. The difference is noticeable (Carol Jacobanis has a softer and more upbeat voice), but not off-putting.
This production is also as educational as the original. It takes a more focused look at certain other aspects of animation, and the DVD includes extras such as an interview with the director and the featurette, “A Day in the Life of Kuromi,” hosted by Kuromi’s Japanese voice actress.
My one complaint? The price. The sequel is slightly longer than the original, but the DVD costs twice as much. With the extras, it’s well worth the money, but an $18 price tag seems a bit high for a 45 minute feature, especially since the original sells for $10.
Great moment: The crew rallies around Kuromi and Shihinmatsu to protect their art.
Summary: Loads of fun, a must for any anime fan. Grade: A
Rated: 13 and up (same as the first one)
