Anime Classroom: the Guns of Gunsmith Cats
April 4th 2009 01:57
Anime, educational? Sure! You can learn all kinds of things from watching anime, and we’re looking at some of them in this series.
Readers of my recent reviews of the manga Gunsmith Cats have heard me praise GSC as the equivalent of a college course in guns. Some of the weapons from the series are:
CZ75
Rally’s favorite handgun dates from 1975, was first produced in Czechoslovakia, and is still being made in the Czech Republic. The original model, which Rally has, is made with a steel frame, as opposed to the later CZ75 P01, which has aluminum construction. The manufacturer claims that the CZ75 and variants are “in service with more Governments, Militaries, Police, and Security agencies than any other pistol in the world.” It is known to be in service in over a dozen countries, including the United States.
Saturday Night Special
Most Americans have heard of the Saturday Night Special, which Rally has an unfortunate encounter with in the first volume. It’s not a particular type of gun, but a broad term for any cheap pistol; street price for a revolver can be as low as $50. They’re often associated with inner city crime, and several attempts have been made in the United States to regulate them. They tend to be small caliber weapons, and are cheaply made, making them fairly easy to get, but not built to last. It’s not unheard of for an SNS to explode in a wielder’s hands. No wonder a gun aficionado like Rally Vincent wouldn’t touch one unless her life depended on it.
Desert Eagle
The Desert Eagle, the pistol of choice for mob hitwoman Bonnie, is probably the most powerful semi-automatic handgun on the market. Made by Israel, it achieves this power with a gas-operated mechanism normally found only in rifles. The Desert Eagle can fire .357 Magnum or .44 Magnum rounds, types normally used only in revolvers.
Radinov’s knife
The knife with the detachable blade used by Russian assassin-for-hire Natalia Radinov in the anime actually exists, and is used by the Spetsnaz, the Russian special forces. Known as a ballistic knife, it’s used for stealth missions when a firearm is inappropriate. The handle has a powerful spring inside that can propel the blade up to twenty feet.
RPG-7
The RPG-7, used in Gunsmith Cats Burst for an assassination attempt on Bean Bandit, is the most widely used anti-tank weapon on the planet. First produced by the Soviet Union and exported to militaries and insurgent groups all over the world, the distinctive RPG-7 is durable, simple to use, and highly effective against most types of armor. But Bean is tough enough to still beat it, in his own unique way.
